Programa de Pós-Graduação em Geociências (PPGeoc)
Teaching and research activities for the Postgraduate Program in Geosciences (PPGEOC) at the Federal University of Pernambuco began in 1973 with the creation of the Master's Course focused on Sedimentary Geology and Hydrogeology; having been accredited along with the Federal Council for Education (CFE) in 1982. In 1978, concentration areas that had already been in place were added to Mineralogy and Petrology, which was also accredited by the CFE in 1992. This year also coincides with the creation of the Doctoral Course, in Mineralogy and Petrology, and its proposal received recommendations from both CNPq and CAPES. The PPGEOC represents the 7th oldest Graduate Program at the Federal University of Pernambuco. The PPPGEOC has always been valued for its quality and innovation in the development of its activities. Its primary function is to train Masters and Doctors qualified to operate in the field of Geosciences, as well as teaching and research activities .
Our graduate program is ranked at level 5 (of 7 by the national ranking for universities) by the Brazilian Federal Agency for the support and the evaluation of post-graduation programs (CAPES).
The community of students that forms the PPGEOC stands out for its diversity, with students coming from various undergraduate courses that include Geology, Biological Sciences, Geography, Physics, Civil and Mine Engineering and Architecture. Due its characteristics and values the Program becomes one of the most attractive centres among candidates from other states in Brazil as well as from other countries (Mexico, Colombia and Angola).
The Program conducts two selection processes per year, usually held in December and July. The two entries allow for candidates to optimize the preparation and increases the institution's potential for attracting students as a research centre that accepts those with a promising profile - including the above mentioned foreign students.
